Ticket to Ride

a five-minute play

The Players: Bethany, Daddy

Act Only

Early afternoon.

Bethany, at the dining room table, methodically cutting up a piece of paper. Daddy, working on the computer in the living room.

Daddy: (looking up, notices Bethany's intensity) Whatcha doin', Beth?

Bethany: (not looking up) Cutting.

Daddy: But what are you making?

Bethany: (still not looking up) Tickets.

Daddy: (intrigued) What are the tickets for?

Bethany: (still not looking up) We're playing "school", and we need tickets for the train.

Daddy: (slightly perplexed) Oh. (he turns back to his computer)

Bethany continues cutting for several minutes, intently as ever, before exiting, a pile of small, folded pieces of paper in her arms, stage center.

Daddy looks up to see her leave, smiles, chuckles quietly to himself, and turns back to his computer.

Curtain.

Camping with Papa Jon & Grandma Miriam

We went camping with Papa Jon & Grandma Miriam last weekend, and it goes without saying that we all had a great time. The weather held out really well, and it was just excellent getting to spend some time together!

A few snapshots:

Guess who got into the cookies while we were waiting for Papa Jon & Grandma Miriam?

("Who, me?")

(Don't worry, after I took this picture, we made sure Rebekah got close enough to the fire to actually cook the marshmallow)

The girls spent plenty of time on the swings, naturally

Bekah borrowed a pair of Grandma Miriam's cool shades...

And since we were in Geneva State Park in Ohio, which is on Lake Erie, we all spent plenty of time on the beach!

(the girls loved helping Grandma Miriam with an awesome art installation!)

For our Father's Day outing, we went mini-golfing at Allison's Mini Golf, which (factoid ahead!) is the oldest mini golf course in the US in continuous play.

Rebekah had a style of play that was... all her own!

The girls are already looking forward to our next camping trip with Papa Jon & Grandma Miriam, and I'm sure Papa & Grandma are, too!

Star Wars Night

We went to Star Wars Night at the Bisons game awhile back. The kids LOVED it, and the theatrics of it all made it pretty amusing for us adults, too!

(Rebekah was the only one who didn't make it to the very end of the game, which went a tad long, but I think she enjoyed sleeping on mommy almost as much as mommy enjoyed it!)

Outside again

(It was a tiny bit chilly this morning, so Bethany insisted on putting on her jacket.) This morning, the kids played outside for a good long time, basically from breakfast straight to lunch. I was fascinated anew by the reality that our older ones are old enough now to play outside on their own (with firm geographical boundaries set in place, of course). It is at once very cool and very odd.

Anyway. On to the pictures.

My shoe is off, my foot is cold

Abby has a habit of taking off only one of her shoes. I can't explain it, of course, but I am always amused at the unintentional reminder of one of my favorite sections from One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish:

My hat is old.
My teeth are gold.
I have a bird I like to hold.
My shoe is off.
My foot is cold.

My shoe is off.
My foot is cold.
I have a bird I like to hold.
My hat is old.
My teeth are gold.
And now my story is all told.

Lovely poem, lovely girls. "And now my story is all told."

Indeed.

In which I am feeling very narrative

Here's Bethany, who is getting pretty excellent at riding her training-wheel-equipped bike!

Here are Rebekah and Jonas, who engaged themselves for quite some time in the classic summertime activity, finding and examining sticks of various lengths.

IMG_20110609_104001

And here's our little Abigail, who amused herself mainly by taking in the action around her.

IMG_20110609_104434

The amount of excitement these kids had before our walk started was off the charts. And I don't mean that in a good way.

IMG_20110609_110921

But of course, once you get them going, it's full speed ahead!

If you listen to my voiceover, you'll notice that I briefly forget my nephew's name, which is Jonas. Not Jonah. Yikes.

And there you have it. Summer Thursdays are good things.

Coloring on the walls

Uncle Mike & Aunt Mary got Rebekah a giant cardboard coloring house for her birthday. It is just as awesome as it sounds, and the kids love it!

Oh, and apparently Abby's already practicing for her teen years...

Pasta with red sauce. Clearly.

I'll say this: the girl knows how to make eating an event.

Camping at Stony Brook State Park

(Warning: there are a LOT of pictures in this post!)

For the holiday weekend, we went camping at Stony Brook State Park, which is about an hour south of Rochester and AWESOME. It has an amazing playground and an excellent & fun hike through the brook that is short enough for even the littlest hikers.

Aunt Sarah & Jonas joined us, as did our friends the Radts for a couple nights; even Uncle Mike, Aunt Mary, and Papa Dave & Grandma Jane came out for a day.

Naturally, everyone had a great time!
